ACX Royalties Explained: Exclusive vs Non-Exclusive (2026)

When you publish through ACX, you face one consequential fork: take the 40% exclusive royalty and stay Audible-only, or take 25% non-exclusive and sell everywhere. It looks like a simple rate comparison. It is really a bet about where your listeners are.

The Two Options

  • Exclusive (40%): Your audiobook is sold only through Audible, Amazon, and iTunes, for a seven-year term, in exchange for the higher royalty.
  • Non-exclusive (25%): A lower royalty, but you can sell the same audiobook anywhere else too — Apple, Spotify, Google, libraries, your own site.

The Real Trade-Off

Exclusive gives you a higher cut of Audible sales but cuts you off from every other store and from libraries. Non-exclusive earns less per Audible sale but lets you stack income from many channels. The question is whether the extra 15% on Audible beats the sum of everywhere else.

A Simple Way to Think About It

If the vast majority of your audience buys on Audible and you do little outside marketing, exclusive can win. If you have your own platform, want library income, or sell across stores, non-exclusive's reach usually wins despite the lower rate. Going wide also pairs with Findaway Voices distribution.

Can You Change Your Mind?

You can move from exclusive to non-exclusive (or vice versa), but exclusive carries a term commitment, so do not treat the choice as casual. Read ACX's current terms before you commit — they change.

The honest summary

Exclusive = higher rate, one store, no libraries. Non-exclusive = lower rate, every store, plus libraries. With AI-cheap production, many indies go wide and let many small channels add up. See the full distribution guide.
